History of the Inn
: a crossing place since its creation...

In
1805, Napoleon traced the new transalpine road linking Modane to Italy
via the Mont-Cenis pass. And, guess what… this road passed right by
what was going to be our house !!!
Really! And seeing there was this opportunity, dear Amédé Melquiot (may he rest in peace) had this house built, which was completed in 1813. It would then serve as a hotel and stage-coach inn, with its stables for horses.
Later on, from 1868 until 1871, the FELL railway (rack-rail train), linking St Michel to Susa, passed right behind the house.
Around 1900, the house is occupied by the Favre family. Camille, the patriarch (a vigorous man, if we believe the recovered writings), was a meat merchant and the “landlord” at the "Café de la poste" which was situated in the house.
At his death, his daughter Gratienne took over the café with her husband, Alexis Feutrier. Alexis’ writings witness the damage caused by the French, Italian and German armies inside and around the house.
